Mid Feb 2024

The Rockwood Hotel was very nice, especially since it was ski in and ski out.  The resort was small with limited runs but because there was less people than larger resorts it was good.  The food at the hotel buffet was very good but didn’t change much over the week.  The only down side was the hotel was isolated from any shops and it was very expensive by taxi to go siteseeing or to a shopping centre

Some feedback on Rookwood Hotel:
1. It is a good 3+ star hotel.
2. Rooms were clean and well appointed. Mine faced the hill (which you might have requested?) which was a bonus as great views on Mountains and dawn light.
3. Onsen was not chlorinated and more than adequate.
4. Bars and night life was a bit limited because it is only one hotel but most guests seemed to linger over dinner for a drink and then go to bed.
5. Buffet was adequate but far fewer options than Appi Kogan but then it was a lot cheaper as well so can’t complain. Certainly plenty of western and Japanese dishes.

Some feedback on Aomori:
1. Really enjoyed the skiing.
2. Good off piste in the trees either side of the top double chair and no one there.
3. Didn’t put the skins on to climb higher out of the resort but it looked excellent and will certainly book the guide and go up there next year if we go back.
4. Groomed runs were done every night to corduroy.
5. We received some snowfalls but was generally light for Japan at that time of the year. That’s the luck of the season.
6. Only 2 options for lunch but the Ramen Hut next to the carpark at the bottom of the quad chair was great. Only attempted the spicy miso ramen once. I like chilli but it was hot …..

Your arrangements were brilliant as always.

Thanks so much.

Our trip started very well with a view of Mt Fuji’s exposed peak from Haneda domestic terminal.
And our time at the Rockwood Hotel at Aomori Springs ski resort didn’t disappoint: comfortable accommodation, great Japanese-style cuisine, friendly/helpful staff, great snow & skiing, and The Ramen Hut at the bottom of the chairlift deserves special mention as a great place to have lunch and exchange stories about the morning’s activities.
Would I go back there? Absolutely!
Cheers …… Brian J

Early Feb 2024

I meant to send our thanks before this!

We had a great time at both Appi and Aomori Springs.
Appi had great piste skiing and good powder on a couple of mornings. Not deep but great quality. Found old ski lift lines and on a windy day, untracked snow under a lift that couldn’t run because of wind at top. Loved the outside Onsen! Great coffee opposite the gondola base. The hotel was fine, pretty busy meal times but plenty of foods to choose from.
Aomori had more tree skiing and so many pistes with lovely snow on the edges. Loved the Ramen house for lunch. Just had to pick a less popular time.Your transport help was perfect. Hotel was fine, food very adequate with less variety but good quality!

Loved our trip, so thanks again.

Cheers

Late January 2024

Rockwood resort Hotel was a great resort in many ways. It would be perfect for those who don’t want to leave a location for shopping or go to a different restaurant every lunchtime or want to wander around a city at endless streets looking at local culture and building etc - because that’s not an option here. However, if you want to stay at a great location with great atmosphere and fantastic rooms (top level rooms) views along with a satisfying sense of calm and relaxation- Rockwood is the place to go

The meals were surprising with a lot of variety and options, even for those who are not adventurous with their eating - there was plenty choices.

The resort has a great feel as well - with a few areas to meet others and sit around, along with a games room and lounges as well.

Our group of 11 had the best time and we all agreed that while it was not the biggest resort around, and a little effort to get there - due to its remoteness - was certainly worth it.

And as it grows in popularity with more and more westerners- our hope is that it retains its same sense of smallness and not too many more  find this little spot - but we are glad we did.

Of course this experience was only made possible with your help and assistance- thanks for also organising transfers, shuttles and other info - much appreciated.

Drew

15th february 2023

In mid-February we enjoyed a week skiing at this resort located in the North of Honshu.

The Rockwood Hotel is the only hotel at this resort, it is conveniently ski-in ski-out with personal lockers to store skis/equipment; and the staff are excellent. The hotel is very comfortable with nice rooms and lovely onsens, including outside ones overlooking the snow. We were well catered for with breakfast and dinner included. On the mountain there is a ramen house which is a must for lunch. This resort is a popular destination for senior Japanese skiers and some school groups. The closest town is about 40 minutes travel so there is limited local night life; but this was not an issue for us as we were there to ski!

During our visit the snow conditions were excellent with lots of fresh snow almost every day and very few people out on the slopes, absolutely no lift queues. This was our second stay at this resort and we would return again, probably 4 to 5 days is enough time to enjoy all the skiing available.

Hisae from JSA did an excellent job organising the accommodation and transfers to the resort, along with advising us on any travel questions while in Japan. We have asked her for help booking our Japanese ski trips for many years and she has always done a brilliant job.

Many thanks

February 2023

We enjoyed Aomori Springs Rockwood again the resort and Hotel again very comfortable enjoyed skiing there as much as last time

The food was very pared back from last time but still good (I guess COVID has affected Japan much the same as Australia in that everyone has to tighten there purse strings so they can stay in business)

We will be looking at staying again next year so again let us know when the deals are out

Thank you again
looking forward to hearing from you later in the year
Kind regards Kay ,Robert, April and Tim

1st February 2023

We booked a 7 night package at Rockwood Hotel & Spa in Aomori.

Firstly, it absolutely dumped snow for the 7 nights were were there and we had the best snow of our lives.

We caught the shinkansen to Aomori and the local trains to Ajigasawa and then a taxi to Rockwood. But, on the way home we just caught a taxi direct to Aomori Station, which was much easier and worth the extra cost. JSA booked the taxi for us and our driver was waiting for us at the train sation. Some other people didnt have a taxi booked and were stuck at the train station, so I reccomend booking the taxi. The hotel booked our return taxi.

The hotel itself is very spacious and has a clean minimilistic Japanese design. Everywhere you go you seem to have an amazing view of the mountains. I felt it had a younger more casual atmosphere. This is the home mountain of Olympic half pipe gold medalist Ayumu Hirano and there is a massive half pipe & big snow park.  The Japanese junior snowboarding team were staying at the hotel & training while we were there and they were going pretty big in the half pipe.

Facilities wise there there is an amazing outdoor onsen, pool table and table tennis table, but to be honest all we did was snowboard, eat and sleep.

The room itself was a standard size with 2 single beds and a couple of chairs by the window to enjoy the amazing view. But, it had the same clean design as the rest of the hotel. No complaints.

We had the buffet breakfast and dinner included in our package. Compared with Appi & Shizukuishi Rockwood had the best buffet. They even had sushi. The design of the restaurant was also very stylish and comfortable.

As for the mountain there there seemed to be a lack of steep runs. A lot of core snowboarders and skiers hiking off piste with guides. So. if you are an advanced level this would be what you come for. Not sure on the resort policy on this. But, if you are an intermediate or beginner I think this would be a great resort as there are so many runs to suit you.

Another thing I noticed was a lot of Americans in big groups. I think they were on guided tours and generally going off piste.

The hotel staff are very relaxed and friendly, but they didn't speak a lot of English.

Aomori was great and I definately go back.

We had another great trip to Aomori Springs in February, as usual you arranged everything perfectly as always.

The hotel is great, staff amazing, food seemed better this year and as usual the snow was amazing.

This year we did a bit of hiking which is very easily accessed from the lifts.

Aomori has been off the radar from westerners however it is getting discovered and there were a few groups there this year fro USA however they only stay for a day or two. Looking forward to coming back next year.

The best hotel out of 4 we stayed in over 3 weeks in Japan. True ski in ski out. Great meals and the best bedroom. All rooms have a great view.

28th January 2023

We had a wonderful time at the Rockwood Hotel.  This is definitely a full service hotel.

Our room was clean and comfortable with plenty of space for 2 people.  We loved that a ski locker was provided that could hold skis, poles and boots for 2 people. Our room had a great view out of the giant window that we enjoyed before/after skiing for the day.

The hotel was very clean in all areas—our room, the onsen, lobbies, dining areas, locker area.  The front desk staff were pleasant and helpful.  We found several gifts to take away in the gift shop.  We enjoyed some apres ski time in the bar area after a fantastic day of powder skiing. The onsens were always appreciated after the day of skiing, so relaxing. I particularly enjoyed the outside onsen and the provided yukatas.

The buffet meals had quite the variety.  I always looked forward to the soups, salad, Japanese foods and the apple sorbet at dinner.  At breakfast I was happy to have yogurt, soup, salad and great coffee and tea.

We had a wonderful stay at the Rockwood and some amazing powder skiing at Aomori Springs.  I look forward to returning to the area.

Thank you again for your assistance in making our stays and trip easier, fun and less stressful.

Sincerely,

The skiing was great this year and Aomori was real treat, especially for skining and tree runs, will definitely go there again. The hotel was great, but this might change next year as it will be part of the Epic Pass.

Once again thank you for your help and commitment, it was awesome as usual.

Look forward to next year.

Rockwood Hotel & Spa lived up to its great name! Our group thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this peaceful and relaxing hotel. All the staff went above and beyond in helping us with any of our questions or travel needs. The resort itself is very neat and tidy with rooms that have fantastic views. The food was outstanding and always very tasty, with a good variety of western dishes and traditional Japanese options. Would highly recommend this resort for anyone looking for a quiet relaxing stay.

A shout out to our back country guide Kenji! You can book Kenji through Rookwood hotel. He is a fantastic guide who has years of knowledge of the mountain and rescue experience. We had an exceptional time with Kenji and can not recommend him enough.

Thank you Kenji and the Rockwood Hotel staff ?

Japan Snow Accomodation:
Hisae our travel agent was nothing short of AMAZING! Hisae was exceptional in helping us plan our family winter holiday. Her local knowledge of the areas within Japan we wanted to travel through was invaluable. The ease of using Japan Snow Accomodation to organise the majority of our trip to Japan took so much pressure off travelling to a new country for the first time. The accomodation the was booked for us was really nice and clean. We had many questions that Hisae patiently answered. When each new stage of our trip was booked, Hisae would send us through confirmation along with an electronic invoice to pay, which was such an easy way for our group to make payment.  We cannot recommend using Japan snow accomodation enough for your next trip. A massive THANK YOU to Hisae for your constant help with our holiday.

Firstly, thankyou so much for all your input and organising with our holiday in Japan! You did a fantastic job. Eliz and I have traveled over 50 countries, and Japan and in particular the Japanese people are at the top of our list.
Rockwood was great. People were super friendly, we can only say positive things about our experience there.
Eliz will write report on all the things we liked, it may help you in the future for what Aussies may find appealing.

Thanks again

Our stay at Rockwood Hotel and Spa was AMAZING!
Skiing from the doorstep was the best!  The ski slopes are absolutely fantastic for beginners and intermediate skiers/boarders.
Breakfast and dinner at the Hotel were beyond our expectations and we thoroughly enjoyed all the meals provided.
We were a bit short of space in our hotel room as there were three of us, however it would be perfect for two.
We are planning another visit to Rockwood Hotel and Spa in the near future.

Amanda Paul - Pottsville, Australia.
Warm regards,
Amanda Paul

Mid Feb 2019

I organised a 7 day trip Australia to Aomori Springs though Japan Snow Accommodation.

This mountain is something very special and would be a great place to learn to ski or snowboard. The process with the company was really easy, efficient and great value with Hisae keeping us informed all the way and organising extras such as free airport transfers and other really nice things. Everything was included in the package like, lift tickets, meal package and transfers. The price for a week’s skiing was very good.

Even though Aomori is up the top of Honshu and a fair way from Tokyo it is easy to fly to via Tokyo or Seoul. We chose to go through Seoul and it was easier to get to than to the resorts in Hokkaido.

We have been skiing Japan for a few years now and I can say that Aomori Springs gets enormous amounts of snow. It snows a lot here even compared to Hokkaido. The sun came out only on our last day which is perfect for people who love to ski or snowboard. There are no lift ques and no waiting for anything. It is a beginners mountain with a real hardcore back country. It is ski in ski out of the hotel.

The Rockwood is very nice and the only close accommodation to the mountain which includes a buffet breakfast and dinner in their packages. The food was very good with a mixture of Japanese and western. The rooms are great with self-contained bathrooms and are a good size for Japanese hotels. Just note the WiFi is bit slow, maybe bring a Sim card and a hard drive  with movies as there is only 6 Japanese TV channels. But who comes to watch TV? The indoor/ outdoor onsen is great, especially if you like it hot.

The staff at the hotel, like all Japanese, are very friendly and polite. We would definitely recommend Japan Snow Accommodation and Aomori Springs to people thinking of travelling to Japan. Thanks again Hisae.

Kind regards,

Scott Barber

JSA note: Guests flying with Korean Air receive free transfers to/from Aomori Spring Resort. Please check with us to confirm this benefit is still avilable before booking flights.

Late Jan 2019

We had an amazing time staying at Rookwood Hotel.

Our western rooms were very comfortable and the meals were amazing, with a wide variety of western and Asian food. Both breakfast and dinner were buffet style. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We utilised the shuttle service from Aomori station and again to Ajigasawa station at the end of our trip.

Aomori Springs ski area had a great range of runs which would suit every level of skier. We were lucky enough to find fresh snow on a number of days during our stay. The ski in/ ski out location of the hotel was fantastic and we also utilised the ski waxing within the hotel which was very convenient.

Would highly recommend staying here and for those who love back country skiing there is also the opportunity to experience it also at Aomori Springs.

Late January 2019

We really enjoyed our time in Aomori Springs it was a

Great place to start our Japanese adventure and ease in to skiing .
The Rockwood Hotel was very comfortable, it was great being ski in ski out, big tick there.
The locker system with combination locks another big tick easy to grab your gear
and get out on the Mountain
(especially with three people no keys so we could come and go as we pleased)
Food again very pleasing, plenty of choice.
Service and Onsen excellent

We would happily stay and ski there again.
(so would our 26 year old daughter April she enjoyed as much as we did.
April works for Thredbo Ski Resort)

Late December 2018

We had a great time at Aomori Spring over Xmas 2018. Our 6th floor room was clean and well-maintained, the daily buffet breakfast and dinners offered plenty of variety, and the hotel staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Nice onsen (indoor and out), some fun Xmas antics with the locals and fresh tracks inbounds on a couple of days – great stuff! Unfortunately the Diamond double chair wasn’t open the entire time we were there - early season though so no big deal.

Feb 2018

Well what a fantastic trip we had across the Tohoku region from Aomori into Iwate!

All 3 accommodations booked through Japan Snow Accommodations were superb and offered us different experiences.

Tohoku February 2018

We were a group of 4 travelling around the Tohoku region of Japan.

Hakkoda Resort Hotel – Excellent location, great skiing and snow but the ropeway can be wind affected, large relaxing onsen and the food spread each night was simply fantastic. What a unique place it is… and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful.

Aomori Springs Rockwood Hotel – What a beautiful setting and resort. Plenty of powder and skiing that could go into the night for an exceptional powder experience. The hotel was fantastic and was located right on the slopes with easy access and plenty of support amenities. An amazing inside and outside onsen could be enjoyed as the snow fell down around you. Stopping for a satisfying lunch at the ramen house was a highlight to look forward to each day. This place was a gem and worth the effort of getting too! The local Ajigasawa sake is pretty good as well.

Geto Camp 88 – How good is this place?! Yes you are in a large dorm and sharing facilities but it is a fantastic experience where everyone is there with the same appreciative and respectful attitude. Being right on the slopes, plenty of snow, good food and after skiing all day you’re in bed early because your exhausted and feeling great after a couple of beers or sake… it is simply a delight to be able to enjoy such a place. The communal areas allow you to relax whilst the inside and outside onsen are a marvellous place to soak up.

We did this mainly by train which, with a bit of preparation for options, was relatively easy to do and the Japanese people were very friendly, helpful  and respectful throughout our travels. Thanks for helping us organise this and we really appreciated the service you provided. Skiing Japan is an adventure to be savoured and a privilege to experience. We’ll be back to all 3 places and more for sure!

Cheers
Pete

We had a nice room overlooking the ski slopes. There is an indoor and outdoor Onsen, also very nice. We enjoyed the ski in and out. The service is friendly and the selection of food was good.  We'll go there again.

Mid January 2016

We had a great time, hotel was good, but one chair only opens weekends and another chair was closed due to lack of snow but opened on the 25th Jan. We are looking at next year so will get hold of you when we decide where we are going.

Thanks again.

Mid January 2016

We loved Rockwood Hotel & Spa. The service was fantastic, and we really appreciated the transfers from the train station and to the airport. We loved the layout of the resort - it was quick and easy to get around and the views were spectacular. The accommodation was great as well as the food at the hotel and the daily onsen was absolutely necessary. We'll be back again and hope to explore even more of the mountain then (some areas were not opened up).

Thanks
