The Mountain

Shiga Kogen is located in Nagano prefecture on the main island in Honshu and is one of the largest ski resorts in Japan. There are 18 ski areas consisting of 51 chairlifts & gondolas. You can ski across most of the mountains or catch the mountain shuttle bus.

Where to stay
The most accommodation chioice is in the Ichinose area where there are several restaurant options to dine out. The Yakebitaiyama area has two ski in & out Shiga Kogen Prince Hotels. The Okushiga Kogen area is nice and quiet and has many high class hotels.

The Location
It is about 90 minutes from Tokyo to Nagano station by Shinkansen and another 90 minutes by Nagaden Express bus from Nagano station to Shiga Kogen. You also have an option to catch the direct airport shuttle to your accommodation. We can help you planning the best way to transfer to Shiga Kogen from the airport or anywhere in Japan.

We stayed at Prince Hotel East, but visited the South and West for lunches, dinners and the Onsen in West.

Our accommodation was excellent. A window looking out to the ski field was great in the mixed weather of sunshine and wild wind!

Breakfast was excellent and provided a great range of choices.

We were surprised at the dinner offering on our first night, a set menu plus buffet but for Y 9100. It turned out to be excellent, but didn't need to spend that much each night! Discovered the comfortable half hourly evening bus system to South, West and Ichinose. Plenty of eating choices at modest cost.

Liked the location of East. Short ski down to the Gondola, compared to a 4 person chair from West. Enabled us to get great powder in the mornings.

We had great skiing and rarely a wait for ski lifts, apart from Sunday morning, after heavy snow fall.

Loved the way you can travel on skis through the many resort areas. No busing! but we needed buses one day when wind shut down lifts and we needed to get home.

Pretty sure we'll go there again!

Oriana and I would like to thank you for a great experience. From our first contact with you where you were able to secure a great deal at the Prince East Hotel at Shiga Kogen with a lot of great inclusions, to guiding us through to the Covid uncertainty and your overall expertise and flexibility.  We will definitely be using your services again on our next Japanese holiday.

The Prince East hotel Shiga Kogen was the perfect fit for us, a beautiful room, great food and snow at the back door.  The staff at the hotel were wonderful and looked after us so well.

Kind Regards

Craig and Oriana Price

Shiga Kogen is a collection of inter-connecting areas to ride. Each with different terrain and accommodation options. We stayed at the Prince Hotel, in the East building, which included breakfast and 3-day lift pass. The room was large, and as you would expect in Japan, clean and well appointed. The rooms in the East building face the slopes with spectacular views. The breakfast was buffet style with plenty of options for you to choose from. There is a small convenience store, with a small equipment hire in the main foyer. Not a lot of options and quite expensive.

The East building would be considered the up-market location out of the 3 buildings. Especially when it came to dinner. We ate there once, and it was overpriced expensive.

They have a free shuttle service that starts at 5pm and goes between the other Prince buildings of South and West and into Ichinose.  The West building has an excellent Ramen bar and Chinese restaurant. The West has the Onsen, rooms are smaller and is much busier, has a larger convenience store and equipment hire. You can walk between the locations and takes about 40 mins from the East Building into Ichinose. Ichinose does have more restaurants options; most you have to book. The staff at the Prince are really helpful and can call and book for you.

Shiga Kogen is an excellent place to visit, if you’re ok with eat, sleep, ride. During the week you’ll have the slopes to yourselves. If you are a beginner or intermediate rider it’s good, advanced not so much. They do leave a lot of ungroomed, so plenty of pow pow.

As always, Hisae does an excellent job of coordinating the accommodation. Hisae has been booking my Japan trips for past 11 years!

Cheers,

Darren
