Stay two nights at Tengendai on top of the mountain & one night at the base at Shirabu Onsen. Experienced guide included.
Tengendai is an unexplored place in the mountains of Yamagata. The nearest Shinkansen station is Yonezawa Station, which is 2 hours away from Tokyo. It takes about 45 minutes by bus from Yonezawa Station to Shirabu Onsen which is the base town to access Tengendai by ropeway.
Where to stay
At the foot of the ropeway, there are several inns in Shirabu Onsen, and the top of the ropeway is a ski resort. There are several small pensions at the top of the ropeway.
The resort
There are 3 lifts at the ski resort, and there is a non-pressurised snow powder zone from the top lift. You can also enjoy the backcountry area with a guide. There is also a long course that connects Yumoto Station at the foot of the ropeway from the top station, and although it is narrow, you can also enjoy the side country with a guide from the middle of the course. We highly recommend that you go with a guide.
Weather conditions
The ropeway may be suspended depending on the weather, so we recommend staying at the pension at the top of the ropeway. However, the inn at the Shirabu Onsen at the foot of the mountain is also charming and you can enjoy the traditional experience of the unexplored land, so we recommend one night. Enjoy delicious dishes made with local famous Yonezawa beef, and rest your body in a wonderful hot spring.
Guided tour package
Based on the above, we sugggest a 3 night package. Stay at a pension above for 2 nights, ski for 2 days, and then spend the last night at an inn in Shirabu Onsen at the foot of the mountain. The itinerary is accompanied by a local guide for 2 days. This plan maximises your enjoyment of the area even if the ropeway is suspended or the lift is partially out of operation due to the weather.
