Madarao Backcountry Tour

Let us introduce this great backcountry tour that would be suitable for beginners but also fun for the experienced.  There are several paths leading up the mountain and hiking up to the top takes around 20 minutes.

Sliding down the mountain on natural half pipes, catching air time by hanging off branches, forming jumps off the contours of the land, being surrounded by trees and sliding, tumbling, and flying through the scenery of Mt. Madarao, will make for an adventure not soon forgotten!

Gifu - Dynaland / Takasu Snow Park - Accommodation

Gifu - Dynaland / Takasu Snow Park Accommodation

We have listed our first accommodation in Gifu!

Gifu is located in the centre of Japan.  If you know the 3rd biggest city Nagaoya, Gifu is north of Nagoya (65 minute drive from Nagoya).  We would like to introduce the most well known resort in Gifu, which is Mt. Takasu.  Mt. Takasu is the largest mountain in West Japan and has Dynaland and Takasu Snow Park adjoining at the top of the mountain.

The left side is Dynaland and the right is Takasu Snow Park.

Dynaland has 18 runs including the whole run with park items.

Dynaland Centre House

Hit the log bridge in the Wood Park!!

Dynaland is open until 23:00pm every night.  Weekends open from 5:00am.  Open for 18 hours on the weekends!!

The centre house of Takasu Snow Park.

The SP Gondola will take you up to the top (2,700 m long) and you can have a 4 km run the longest!!

Hotel Villa Montsaint is conveniently located near the Dynaland.  There is a free shuttle bus to connect you to Dynaland and Takasu Snow Park from the hotel.  The rate starts from 15,800 yen including 2 day lift pass for Mt. Takasu, breakfast & dinner, free car park, twin share.  (weekdays only)

If you would like to add something more to your trip to Gifu, there is an amazing spot to visit.  It is about an hour drive from Dynaland.  Shirakawago is a historical snow village acknowledged as a world heritage.

The beautiful scenery on the way to Shirakawago.

Looking down the Shirakawago village.

One of the Gasyo-zukuri houses in Shirakawago.  Some of them are 300 years old.

Inside the house

It is said that people started building this style of building called Gasyo-zukuri in the 17th century.  The angle of the roof is helping the snow to fall down naturally instead of people climbing up the dangerous slippery roof to remove the snow.  The village still has very old Gasyo-zukuri houses.

It is certainly worth visiting this beautiful village on your way to / from Mt. Takasu resort to experience how the Japanese people lived 300 years ago. You can just drop in for a visit or you can stay the night and enjoy traditional Japanese cooking and an Asahi around the fire before curling up for a cozy nights sleep on the futon. It will certainly be an experience you will never forget!

Shiga Kogen Nagano | Japan Ski snowboard Holiday

Shiga Kogen Snow Holiday

Shiga Kogen is part of Nagano prefecture, the largest winter resort in Japan with 19 unique ski fields and the most excellent snow quality in the mountains ranging from 1,300 to 2,300 metres.  Some areas such as Okushiga Kogen are strictly limited to skiers only, which makes this resort pretty unique.

We would like to show you our little journey to Shiga Kogen.

The good looking wooden sign welcomed us to Shiga Kogen.

This is where we stayed.  Villa Ichinose.  Our room was a tatami room with futon beds and a private bathroom.  Even though we had a private bathroom, we used the communal bathroom because it was so good after a long day snowboarding.  The large communal lounge area has a wood fire, table and chairs, sofas, plenty of space for the guests to relax or meet new friends.  Yuichi the manager is very helpful and speaks good English.  We loved to stay at Villa Ichinose!

Hmmm.  It doesn't seem easy to live with wild monkeys...

Watch out!!

Tannenomori Okojo ski area.  This is right behind Villa Ichinose.  The runs are short but there is a very fast quad chairlift.  We quite enjoyed the tree runs!

An overnight snow fall berried our car...

We were recommended to go check out the Yokoteyama area.  You can catch mountain shuttle buses to move around the mountains or you could even ski or snowboard from one side to the other end if you are keen.  We had our own car so we drove to an area called Kumanoyu Onsen.

Wow wow wow!  I had never seen anything like this already at the car park... beautiful blue skies and just white trees covered with snow.

Took two chairlifts up to right at the top of Mt. Yokoteyama.  All the trees were frozen white.

The coldest looking chairlift station ever.

These towers are usually ugly but beautiful in this white world.

The run coming down from Mt. Yokoteyama is limited to skiers only so being snowboarders we had to go down on the chairlift.  But you know what?  I think that worked out great because we got to see this beautiful scenery from up there!

If you have a nice sunny day with blue skies while visiting Shiga Kogen, Yokoteyama is a "must" spot to go!!  We miss the beautiful Shiga Kogen...
