Alp Bach

Mid January 2014.

My stay at Madarao totally exceeded my expectation.

The accommodation was great, well-heated, absolutely beautiful scenery, it was comfortable and not at all crowded. Naoko made our stay so lovely and enjoyable. She was so hospitable, friendly and the food she made was top quality.

I would have to say that it was the best all-round accommodation, meals and service that I received my entire trip in Japan.

The mountain was amazing, it looked beautiful and I had so much fun snowboarding on the slopes.

I would most definitely stay at Madarao Alpbach again, and am hoping to do so soon!

Below are some photos from my trip

Best Regards

Mid February 2014 "Accomadation was amazing at Alpbach....It made our trip.

The owners and their dog are the best...amazing food and location. Honestly had the best time...

Your help was awesome too.....We will be back next year! Thanks for all your help!"

Mid February 2014 The trip was awesome accommodation was fantastic!

Mid January 2014 "We had such a fantastic time at Alp Bach. Naoko and Ukihiro are such wonderful people.

They made us feel like we were part of their family. Our stay there is a beautiful memory. We had fresh snow most days. And had some fun times with other Japanese families too.

Thanks for your support and concern for our arrangements. We are so lucky to have you as our agent. Thankyou for your professional and prompt service."

Mid January 2013 "We ended up being the only guest through most of our stay meaning we felt like we were living in a big house with an open fireplace and views of the ski hill.

Access to the ski hill was a 50m walk over the road to strap in. At the end of the day the ski out was similar with a short walk over a car park to get home.

We ended up having dinners at the place for 2000 yen and they were massive four coarse meals so we actually asked for a little bit less food. The food was fantastic and the breakfast were great. The owner family were great and we met the whole family, even the dog who was very friendly. I am pretty confident in saying in the 5 trips to Japan visiting over a dozen major ski destinations in Japan our group was probably the most relaxed and enjoyed there stay at the Alp Bach the most. Normally as a group we look for new places to ski but as a group we are all talking about when we can get back to Madarao. So thanks for the recommendation and I thought you would like to know."

Mid February 2014

Trip was great, thanks very much. I think we lucked into the best week of the season for snowfall. No trouble with your service, found it excellent.

Seisenso was OK. It was run by a very nice woman and she was very helpful.

The pension itself though is quite old and could do with a bit of a renovation.

There are only two or three western style toilets in the whole building.

The common area is very small and not heated.

Drying room was too small for the number of people who needed to use it.

Location was good - very central in the town.

The included breakfast was good - good variety of japanese/western options.

Onsen was good.

Lodge Bergland

Late Deecember 2015

We have been travelling mainly on and sometimes off to Japan since 2003. We travelled to Honshu, Nagano area, since we had a brilliant trip the year before skiing Nozawa Onsen and Madarao.

We have used Hisae and the team at Japan snow accommodations, which takes a lot of the hard work out of planning the trip. Also we have asked for alternatives and there was a quick answer and good information at all times.

After Nozawa, We made the short bus trip to Madarao ski resort there are two bus lines that run there daily. This is a small ski area but very compact runs and very nice layout. Again the year before we were skiing abundance of powder, this year was a little slower. We stayed at the Lodge Berglund, Mr Yamada and his family. This is in a secluded area with a short walk to the lifts each morning. They lodge is very clean, breakfasts are very good, a ski drying and storage area down stairs, WIFI everything that we needed for the trip. The lodge has dinners on request, or there are a number of small restaurants within a short walking distance. I would stay there again for the location, small lodge, privacy and the Japanese family atmosphere!

Early February 2015

Lodge Bergland was great.

Top location.

Hosts went above and beyond.

Would definitely stay again and definitely recommend to others.

Thank you also for setting up the accomodation.

Late January & early February 2015

My vacation at Madarao was awesome, had a great time!!
Extremely friendly and nice people, made lots of friends, enjoyed skiing with them.
Love the stay at Lodge Bergland, Yamada San and his wife treated me like a family member.
Extremely thankful to Yamada San to pick me up from Tangram resort when I mistakenly ended up there and the return ski lifts had closed. He even gifted me a pair of ski poles!!!!!
Enjoyed drinks and food at Rudolf!!!
Cannot forget Morito San and Akiko san's challenges :-)
And yes!!! What a great skier GG Hitoshi San is, I wish I could train under him!!!!
Attaching few pics, not sure if they are of any good use to you!!!

Late January 2015.

I had a fantastic time at Madarao in no small part due to the accommodation provided at Lodge Berglund by Mr Yamada and his wife. The lodge is a short stroll from the ski lifts and ticket office with guests receiving a generous discount on lift tickets when they purchase a coupon at the lodge in the morning.

Breakfasts were filling and always served up in time to allow you to make the most of the ski day, do yourself a favour and stay in at least one night for a home cooked meal at the Lodge.

I was fortunate to have Mr Yamada drive me to my accommodation in Myoko Kogen at the end of my stay in Madarao (in a blizard) which I am very greatful of.

I would highly reccommend this lodge to all travelers (singles, groups or families) and will certainly be back in the not too distant future.

Booking through Hisae at Japan snow Accommodation made for a very easy trip considering the limited english in Madarao.

Late January 2014

Hisae from Japan Snow Accommodation arranged my reservation with Lodge Bergland and provided detailed information on Madarao Mountain (such as how to to/from Madarao and facilities available in Madarao) in addition to details about Lodge Bergland. Hisae was very prompt in responding to my various requests for quotes on accommodation and helped me greatly in finding accommodation in Madarao that ticked all the boxes at the right price for a solo traveller. My stay at Lodge Bergland was one of the highlights of my journey around Japan – it was a true cultural exchange which has left me with many happy memories. The owners of the lodge are extremely welcoming and generous – Mr Yamada even arranged a day trip to Myoko Kogen and spent the day skiing with me. The size of my room was very large with two very comfortable single western style beds and a small bathroom including toilet and shower. A gender separated bath was also available downstairs in the afternoon/evening to ease the tired muscles at the end of the day. The breakfasts were amazing with something different each day. The location of Lodge Bergland is quite good within close proximity to a convenience store and a short walk up to the ski area entrance. In summary, Lodge Bergland offers excellent hospitality at the right price with great value bonuses such as discounted lift tickets, ski hire and waxing. The ski area is amazing on a powder day. Many of the courses are ungroomed with plenty of opportunity for awesome deep powdery light snow and you can challenge your skills in the tree run areas. There is also a pretty awesome view from the top of the mountain. There are plenty of on mountain dining options at very reasonable prices. Off mountain, there are a few convenience stores and small restaurants in addition to the Madarao Kogen Hotel offering both Japanese and Western style food. Take your time to find the smaller restaurants and you will be rewarded with friendly service and delicious food. Below are some photo's from my trip Cheers Alison

Late December 2013 "My stay was very nice!

Concerning the mountain, the snow was very good! There was just a few lifts which weren’t operating... i don’t know why, but still it was nice.

The lodge was very nice and comfortable. The host was very kind and helpful! i would definitly recommand this place.

I don’t have pictures of the hotel, but I attached a few pictures of the ski station.

Thanks for your help, everything was fine"

From Martin N

"We had stayed in NozawaOnsen for 3 days prior to arriving in Madarao.

The feel of Madarao town is quite different from Nozawa Onsen (more european style at MK compared to traditional village style at NO).

We found the Lodge Bergland a very enjoyable stay with the owners being very helpful.

Rooms were clean, spacious and nicely heated. Im not sure if double beds are available but we were given singles (not that we had any issue with that).

The lodge offers ski hire at far cheaper price than outside and of acceptable quality.

The breakfast was typical of the lodges we stayed at and was very nice.

It takes approx 5min to walk from the chairlift to the lodge (in ski boots). The ski field is much smaller than NO but still very enjoyable (especially the off piste skiing in the trees).

We would definitely go back to stay at Lodge Bergland given the chance."

January 2013 "I had a great trip thank you for your help and recommendation.

Lodge Bergland is a great place to stay for your time at Madarao kogen. A warm and homely place with a very friendly and accommodating owner, very attentive and ensured that my stay was a great experience willing to help with lift tickets and transport to local restaurants and even to the mountain.

The room was extremely warm and comfortable and of good size. Great onsen downstairs. I will definitely Return on future visits."

Reviews - Semi Onsen Ryokan

Mid Feb 2017

We enjoyed the Skiing but the Semi Onsen  was fabulous. The staff looked after our every need and they were delightful the best Japanese experience.

If they wish to improve on an already great experience adding a dedicated shuttle bus with a bit more flexibility would make just that much better.Would most certainly go back.

Thank you for the work you put in to make that happen.

Kind regards

Late January 2017

It was our first time staying at a ryokan and we loved  the Japanese experience at Semi Onsen. The rotenburo was my favourite and was simply beautiful. Often, I had it all to myself. The local ladies and other Japanese visitors who visited the onsen were so friendly, that I finally got some much needed Japanese practice.  We stayed in a western twin room that was immaculately clean, quite spacious and comfortable. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. The meals were Japanese style with many, many beautifully prepared, delicious courses.

Hakkoda Hotel

Mid Jan 2016

I really enjoyed staying at the Hakkoda Hotel for a couple of nights.

It feels more like a lodge than a hotel, with a large lounge area that is perfect for reading or couch surfing (free wifi), spacious western style rooms and a friendly but professional staff.

The Japanese breakfasts were excellent (western breakfast also available), as was dinner, although the menu was fairly limited. I was skiing with Simon's Hakkoda Powder Guides, and the staff were really helpful in getting me there on time and picking me up at the end of the day.  Another highlight was being able to walk to Sukayu onsen, an historic onsen with a lot of atmosphere and well worth a visit. Overall, if you feel like staying somewhere that feels a little more luxurious and don't mind the commute to the rope way, Hakkoda Hotel is a great option.

Early Jan 2016

I am truly impressed with both the quality of the food, accomodation and service of the people on Hakkoda hotel. It was amazing! Also the service you provided with almost instant answering e-mails with all of my questions. We had 5 amazing days skiing. Would love to go back, and will also be using JSA again without a doubt.

"Just a quick note to thank you for all of your assistance with my trip to Hakkoda.

The Hakkoda Hotel was very nice, the staff extremely helpful, and the food was absolutely amazing.

Everything was as expected, including transport from and back to Shin-Aomori.

I had two really wonderful days of skiing with guides that the hotel helped me organise. And I was pleased to be able to use Sukayu Onsen.

I really can't thank you enough for everything you did and the advice you provided. I will definitely contact you when I am organising future ski trips to Japan."

We've had a fabulous time in Hakuba and staying at the Brownie Condominiums has been perfect for us.

The owners/managers have been so helpful and so friendly, making our stay easy and "just like home"!

Thanks you fro making the booking process so easy & we look forward to booking our nest trip to Kakuba with you.

Late February 2014.

Hakuba was great, a few more people around however (compared with Madarao). Testu and the staff at brownie villas were amazing!

Testu took us out skiing and was around the clock going above and beyond to make our stay easy! Testu was just fabulous!!

Again I hope to return!

We also did a back country tour with Dave Enright, that to was just amazing!

We escaped our first day of rain, which happened too be our last day skiing and had powder to our bellies again!!

We all absolutely loved japan, the people, the snow and the hospitality!!

I'd like to thank you again Hisae for all your help and advice in making our journey so accommodating and fantastic!!

Can't wait to visit again in the near future!

Nakajimaya Ryokan guest review

Late Feb 2017

We had a fantastic time.  The hosts at Nakajimaya were really nice, and the breakfast was a great combination of authentic Japanese food with excellent flavor.  We also really like Nozawa: the hot springs are a necessary cultural experience for anyone wanting to understand these rural mountain towns, and the resort has the best off piste skiing that we're done in Japan.

Overall, great.  We'll totally come back in a couple years!

Late Feb 2017

Our trip was great, we enjoyed the resort, easy access, hiring the equipment was effortless, the runs were fabulous. The ryokan was good, very welcoming and so helpful. Apart from the breakfast, everything was enjoyable. I suppose we had such wonderful Japanese breakfast everywhere else, we were expecting better than what was served.

Thank you for your service, it was perfect.

Mid Jan 2016

Your service is excellent. Whithout you, I would have been unable to find an accomodation in this peak period.

The accomodation was great and the owner of the Ryokan very friendly.

We loved the village too, and the dosijin worth to be seen, really impressive and interesting (and you can have some sake shots on the slopes !).

The ski lift were not too crowded, althought it was the aussie's holiday. This is a really good point.

I was disapointed by the snow coverage, a lot of bottom slopes were closed...I'm use to in europ, bad luck in Japan. I'm an expert backcountry skier, Nozawa lacks of steep run, and the space between trees is not sufficient in the forest to ski in (except on the side of Hikage gondola, acess by first station of the other gondola). Some nice runs too from the skyline on both sides. But many trees...

Thanks again Hisae, I will certainly take your advice for my next season in Japan !

Mid Jan 2016

Thank you so much for arranging such beautiful, picturesque, cultural and comfortable accommodation at such a good price (at the last minute) in such a fabulous location! The entire town is perfection; beautiful and ancient and culturally rich and an absolute joy to visit.

The walk to and from our accommodation each day was always a highlight, we absolutely loved the fire festival, and even though the snow was average it was nonetheless one of the best holidays I've ever been on.

The accommodation itself was fantastic, the food was absolutely outstanding, but by far the highlight were the staff. Please send a very special thank you to our hostess (I'm so sorry I've forgotten her name!). Nothing was too much trouble, and all the staff went above and beyond to help us silly Aussies to understand and fully appreciate their town.

We have been raving about the trip for months now, recommend the village, the accommodation and of course your services to anyone who will listen, and are already plotting to go back.

Thank you Hisae for making our trip wonderful!

Kind regards,

Early Jan 2016

We had a wonderful trip. Nakajimaya Ryokan was exactly what we wanted. It is a beautifully run, traditional ryokan serving wonderful food. It is clean, comfortable and convenient for skiers moving to and from the peaks of Nozawa Onsen. We hope we can return some time soon.

Best wishes,

Late Dec 2015

We loved staying at Nakajimaya Ryokan and experiencing a traditional Japanese Inn. Yukiko, her family and staff were all exceptionally kind and helpful, always giving us good advice and explaining Japanese customs when necessary. Our rooms were both quiet and spacious with plenty of room for the family to relax at the end of the day. It was a real draw card having a private onsen within the ryokan and we made good use of this everyday.

Nozawa is a gorgeous village with many restaurants and bars, we were able to find a different place to eat every night and also enjoyed a superb meal at the Nakajimaya Ryokan as well. We will definitely be going back there.

Late January 2015

We loved our holiday in Japan.

Thanks you for booking us into Nakajimaya Ryokan.

We had an amazing family experience and loved the Ryokan.

The family were fantastic hosts and very helpful.

We would love to stay there again.

Certainly the walk to and from the ski hill through the village streets was enjoyable every day and we liked being a bit out of the busy areas.

I have attached a few photos from our stay to show you!

So thanks so much for looking after us!

The Campbells

Early January 2015

Just wanted to let you know that our Nozawa Onsen trip was a big success and we all had an excellent stay at the Nakajimaya Ryokan.

The hosts at the Ryokan were always friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome.

Please pass on our thanks to them.

Getting to the snow via Shinkansen, local train and bus was stress free and like everything else in Japan, was on time and schedule.

And the skiing was superb.

Hopefully we’ll do it again next year.

Attached are the happy customers.

Mid January 2014

We had a wonderful time at Nozawa Onsen thankyou

Your service was wonderful , esp finding something so perfect for us at relatively late notice., at a busy time of year.

We really loved Nakajimaya Ryokan

Loved the traditional nature of it and being exposed to other Japanese travellers and staff as well , rather than the 1st lodge we stayed at for the first 3 days which was great but not especially Japanese.

The lady in charge was absolutely beautiful to us and so kind and helpful- she was gorgeous.

The food was amazing and we loved the exposure to the traditional dishes and table arrangements .

It was nice also to experience the in house onsen without having to go out in the cold to get there.

The masseuse across the road was very good after a day of skiing and really enjoyed being able to walk easily to everything in the village esp for the fire festival.

Even able to come back to the rooms for a while to watch where the festival was up to , then go out again later on . Rooms very cosy and comfortable.

Was not too far a walk to the travellator either to get to the ski fields.

The woman in charge of the hotel was very good with making bookings etc for us-very reliable and great service.

Absolutely loved the village and the skiing.People friendly .

Snow wonderful. Very pretty and long green runs , so enjoyable with children – they loved it .

Beautiful and interesting village and so glad we saw the fire festival . Nice to have more a traditional glimpse of everything.

Only thing to mention to people is book your restaurant meals ahead as it is a small village and venues get booked out ahead .

Thanks for your help

Would love to go back

Late January 2014

My wife and I stayed at Nakajimaya Ryokan, Nozawa Onsen in February 2014.

The rooms are large and comfortable, staff are helpful, smiling and courteous always, and the food is amazing.

Many other great restaurants are nearby, as well as numerous free public onsens, 1 of which is right outside the front door.

When we return to Nozawa, we will be staying at Nakajimaya Ryokan."

Mid January 2013

This is an excellent traditional ryokan.

The family that run it are very friendly and helpful, the rooms are comfortable and well decorated and the food is of a very high quality. I recommend having breakfast here and the dinner is also excellent. we spent a week here before heading off to hokkaido and it was one of the highlights of our trip."

By Andrew M

Mid January 2013

Our group of 8 women had a wonderful week.

The staff were friendly and attentive. We loved the breakfasts so much that we also had 2 dinners. The snow was superb and the Ryokan onsen was a must after a full day in the pow pow. No hesitation in recommending Nakajimaya to anyone and everyone."

Our trip was amazing and we loved our stay at Nakajimaya Ryokan

- the staff were friendly and attentive, the accommodation was very comfortable and we absolutely loved the traditional breakfast each morning! We would happily recommend Nakajimaya to anyone."

Book at Hotel Stelle Belle

Mid January 2014 "The accommodation: rooms warm and spacious , towel changed daily, beds every other day, clean, 24 hr Japanese bath was nice

No lobby for guests to hang out

No Wifi in the rooms

Service: lovely customer service, helpful,

wished more frequent trips to and from Hakuba Iimori .

Breakfast: Ok, was told 7:30-8:15, to my opinion too limited for a holiday hotel where guest may wish to sleep in a bit & then have breakfast

Distance: to Hakuba Guryu, walking

Beautiful area

Japan snow staff: very helpful , thank you"

"We stay there a full week early march. We wish to recommand this hotel for the location as you can walk and reach the "escal plaza" in 5 Minutes (starting point of the ski activity.)

No need to worry about shuttle service schedule etc...free to ski.

But we wish also to point out that Konno San, His wife and THE ALL team are extremely kind, helpfull and attentive to all your needs.(pick you up at the bus station, bring you somewhere if you need etc...)

By the way food is excellent (either Japanese or Western)and the hotel is very calm and peacefull day and night and perfectly clean, warm.

The basement is equiped with lockers for skying equipment and the change room is of course heated)

The last but not the least and maybe THE point the quality of snow in Hakuba Goryu is there EXCEPTIONAL and very stable in quality (far different from Europe). A nice place."
