Semi Onsen was fantastic.  The staff was very attentive and accommodating (particularly the young woman who spoke great english and the gentleman who gave me a pair of slippers).  The service and food in the dining area was top notch.  We enjoyed trying different sakes at dinner that were recommended.  We loved the different onsen options as well.  The proximity to the resort was good, but the resort was too crowded on the weekends-you spend as much time in the cue as you do skiing.
Your service was great - communication was prompt and helpful.  Any questions were answered immediately.  It was nice to meet you in person!  I hope you enjoyed your stay as well and that you found some new adventures to market.
Thanks, Hisae!

We really enjoyed our stay at Semi Onsen! It may not be the most fancy or modern hotel we stayed at during our trip to Japan, but we really felt well taken care of by the very friendly staff (although very few spoke english).

The food was fantastic and a very good introduction to real Japanese food since this was our first stay on our trip. For my part i really didn’t get as good food anywhere else on our trip -although the food in general was very good.

We also think Geto Kogen was great as it was possible to find fresh lines all through the day.

Best regards

Lennart

Overall

The trip was fantastic, due to many of the comments below.

Your service

Your service was excellent, as I have said in an email before we left. You are so well organised and helpful that everything was easy. I also appreciated your willingness to contact both of our accommodation places when our flight was delayed and the late opening of the Japan Rail Pass Office meant we had to catch a later train. I have already recommended you to other people and we will definitely use you again.

Japan Rail Pass

This was excellent, but I only found out about it quite late and had to get it delivered to Maruken Sanso. I think it would be good for you to mention it to your customers as something to consider. We treated ourselves to a “Green Car” pass. It was about 30% more expensive, but the seating was like business or first class.

Cash

Japan seems to operate much more on cash compared to Australia’s use of credit cards. It would be helpful to advise customers of that beforehand and even to know where there are International ATMs in the various resorts. For example, there is one in Nozawa Onsen near the Chou Bus Terminal.

Time of year

We chose our dates when we were free, but it worked out very well. The Australian school holidays had just ended, so the crowds were much less. We hardly had to wait for any lifts. If I can, I will always choose to go in February.

Geto Kogen

This is a much smaller resort, but still very nice. I only have two negative comments:

Unfortunately the ski holders on the outside of the gondola don’t fit wider powder skis, so you have to take them inside, but the gondola is very small, so that is difficult. We hardly used the gondola as a result. If you can, please suggest to the resort that they change the holders on the outside of the gondolas. I don’t think it would cost them very much. The resort gets very crowded on the weekend. It was almost empty during the week, but there were quite long queues on the weekend. Someone gave us the general advice that you should “ski during the week” and “travel between resorts on the weekend”.

Semi Onsen Ryokan

This was exceptional. It was worth a holiday in itself: the staff were very friendly and helpful; every meal was like eating in a top class restaurant; the surrounding bush and river were beautiful; the outside onsen was very nice; and the whole ryokan exuded an air of peace, quiet, and relaxation. As you can tell, I want to go back.

Ski Hire

You were right. The performance skis were good, but the boots were of a very low standard. I could see that from the photos you sent, but I asked for them too late and couldn’t do anything else. However, it actually worked out quite okay. The smaller sizes of boots were much better, so my son’s boots were good enough for the 5 days. I switched to my Telemark skis after day 1, so that worked out fine too. I think we are ready to buy our own boots now anyway.

Summary

It was a superb holiday. We will contact you to come back as soon as we can – next year I hope.

Regards

Paul

It was a fantastic way to sample traditional Japanese accommodation & food as well  being close to the mountain.
Nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommend staying there.

Late January 2020

The trip was awesome, shame the snow wasn’t that great.  But saying that it was still a hundred times better than NZ and  we managed some powder at Geto Kogen and Oze.

Semi Onsen is a great place to stay (only drawback is you have to get a shuttle up to the ski resort), the people and food are great.  It was interesting as we meet some people who stay last year, so skiers love this place. Geto is an awesome mountain, but this year with the lack of snow was only ok.

We did have a couple of powder days, but with the warm weather the snow disappeared real quick.  We had some friends come up to Japan for the first time and they loved the experience and thought the snow was awesome. As a resort I would defiantly go back.
Really loved your service and help making this a great holiday.

We were really surprised how wonderful Semi Onsen ryokan was.

The lodging is located only 10mins from the resort and the free shuttle was ideal. The onsens were clean and there are several to choose from. The in-house massage service was excellent and the staff really know how to relax exhausted muscles. The best part of staying at Semi onsen is the food. A sumptuous set menu with a plethora of courses each night was a taste sensation and adventure.

We can’t recommend Semi onsen or JSA highly enough. Thanks again Hisae

Semi Onsen is great.
Skiing was amazing again this year
Ski patrol was pretty aggressive. We didn’t understand and the trail map is not clear. They have a few tree runs but the rest of the area between lifts is out of bounds. It isn’t roped off and the trail map doesn’t say out of bounds and much of it is just as skiable as the actual tree runs. I think they would be better with a Tomamu system and rope off the areas that they really do consider dangerous and avalanche prone. Let skiers ski the rest.
Best Wishes
David

Yes all went very well, excellent Onsen and accomodation was good.
Only problem for a westerner was the breakfast ... still have trouble with full Japanese breakfast.
It apart from that everything else was good.
Maybe a couple more western options like some fruit and breakfast cereal might help.
Some good coffee would help as well !

Thanks

I don’t want to tell you this, because I would love to keep it a secret,  but Semi Onsen Ryukan was awesome. The location, staff and hospitality was great.  They would go out of their way to help with any, and everything. When it came to food, you are in for a treat, with the best Japanese food around. (my only complaint is, it would be nice to have an English option for breakfast). The rooms were spacious and well presented. Definitely want to go back next year.
Thanks so much for all your help.
Kind regards

Semi Onsen ryokan is an amazing place with lovely staff and a good variety of onsen to sample.

The kaiseki dining for breakfast and dinner was amazing (and a little challenging at times!) and our Japanese style room overlooking the river was clean and reasonably spacious.

We had a car so we didn’t have to rely on the ryokan’s shuttle up and down the hill to Geto (~15 mins each way).

Geto was definitely a powder magnet but due to a big snow pattern coinciding with the New Year holiday it was heaving with local snowboarders making the most of things. Good on them – having a hill like this 30 mins or so up the road from home would be awesome!

Be aware if you are seeking tree runs that the tree courses don’t open until around mid-January – they certainly looked very attractive when we were there first week of January but alas, only the little Rabbit tree course was open and no-one was ducking ropes.

The service, the Food, the helpful friendly staff and the rooms are as good as Hakkoda. The choice of Onsen even better.

There is one issue which my wife didn't appreciate very much and this is the shuttle service to and from the ski slopes. It didn't bother me but she would have liked at least one additional service in between. This might become a big criteria for our next trip.

Semi Onsen was very nice. The staff were welcoming and it was great having a choice of 2 onsens, including outside onsen. The food was also very good. Good wifi and nice Japanese style room. The free shuttle service to Geto Kogen was also appreciated.

I would recommend to westerners to stay during the week as I think Semi Onsen, Kitakami and Geto Kogen are very popular with the Japanese on Fri and Sat nights.

Japan Snow Accommodation hooked me up last minute with 2 days of skiing at Geto and 2 nights accommodations at Semi Onsen Ryokan. Semi Onsen was excellent!  The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful.  They have shuttle service to/from mountain.  Kaiseki dinner and breakfast were one of best I've had while staying at any traditional Ryokan in Japan.  Lastly, the Onsens at Semi are worth the trip alone.  If you are going to Geto Kogen highly recommend staying at Semi Onsen!  Thanks to Hisae at Japan Snow Accommodation and Semi Onsen Ryokan for a great trip.

We enjoyed the Skiing but the Semi Onsen  was fabulous. The staff looked after our every need and they were delightful the best Japanese experience. If they wish to improve on an already great experience adding a dedicated shuttle bus with a bit more flexibility would make just that much better.Would most certainly go back.Thank you for the work you put in to make that happen.

It was our first time staying at a ryokan and we loved  the Japanese experience at Semi Onsen. The rotenburo was my favourite and was simply beautiful. Often, I had it all to myself. The local ladies and other Japanese visitors who visited the onsen were so friendly, that I finally got some much needed Japanese practice.  We stayed in a western twin room that was immaculately clean, quite spacious and comfortable. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. The meals were Japanese style with many, many beautifully prepared, delicious courses.

Geto has been amazing and I think the best powder day I've ever had. Great mountain and great accom with the food a real highlight. Can you please pass on our thanks to the wonderful staff that have taken care of us at Semi Onsen. They are so nice and our stay has been beautiful.

It is about 10 minutes drive to Geto Kogen by the ryokan's free scheduled shuttle.

Semi Onsen Ryokan also offers free scheduled pick up & drop off at Kitakami station which you arrive by bullet train.

Geto receives huge amount of snow falls. The tree run ares are so much fun for powder skiing & snowboarding after massive snow storms.

Probably not suited to families but perfect for those who are looking for new and less crowded new powder mountains.

The closest train station is Kitakami, which takes about 2 hours 20 minutes from Tokyo by Tohoku Shinkansen (bullet train). There is free shuttle from Kitakami to Geto or we can arrange a taxi which takes about 50 minutes.

We have two choices of accommodation. Semo onsen Ryoakn is traditional japanese style accommodation 10 mintes drive from the lifts and Geto Camp 88 is cheaper dormentry style accommodation right on the mountain.
